Sophia Wells 13Gr and Christopher Hobbs 13Gr, members of the 19( Auckland) Squadron Air Training Corps, have ranked as the top cadet target shooting team in New Zealand and their team are now Commonwealth Champions having beaten the competition from all the Commonwealth countries, to win the Gold Medal in the Ffennell Shooting Competition.
Competitors in a team of 8 have 2 shots each, to score maximum points on 10 different targets. The scores of each individual in the team are combined and the team that amasses the most points win.
Sophia describes the Air Training Corps as ‘one of New Zealand best kept secrets’. There are in fact 49 Air Training Corps units in New Zealand. Sophia is passionate about the experiences, training and skills that the Air Training Corps affords her. In addition to shooting, cadets are taught aviation theory and have practical flying and gliding experience. Bushcraft, survival skills, first aid and parade drills, keep the cadets involved and motivated. While Christopher has now left the Corps, Sophia has been so inspired, she sees her future after University in the Services, possibly as a Communications Officer or Learning Development Officer.
We congratulate both Sophia and Christopher for this fantastic achievement.
