Year 9 students were warmly welcomed into the OHS whanau with a Powhiri led by Mr Mike Webber, teacher and attended by Mr Tony Coughlan Principal, of Royal Oak Intermediate; we are honoured to have them support the Year 9 students.
Principal Deidre Shea, extended her welcome to all students, whanau and staff as they begin a new and exciting journey at OHS. Ms Shea thanked all those family members who came to support their tamariki. Ms Shea emphasised how important the relationship was between the student, their whanau and the school. This partnership, which we value tremendously is key to success.
Being anxious when you begin anything new is completely normal and to be expected. Kaitiaki, peer support leaders and the senior leadership are all here to support students. Mr Safotu Filipo, Year 9 Dean, looks forward to meeting and getting to know you all. Ms Talia McNaughton, Senior Leader in charge of Year 9 is also excited to get to know you and has very high expectations of you.
Students are encouraged to become involved in the life of the school. Trials for summer sports begin very soon. Don’t be afraid to try something new, you don’t have to be an expert to join a team! If sport doesn’t interest you, there are a large number of activities for you to choose from. Make sure that you check the notices on the school website to see what is available. This is a great way to make new friends and learn new skills.
All OHS students are expected to show respect at all times: respect for yourself, respect for other students, respect for staff and for the environment.
We wish all of you a happy and exciting start to your journey at OHS.
