Malo e lelei. Last week OHS had a wonderful week celebrating Tongan language and culture. This year’s theme was ‘Fakakoloa ‘o Aotearoa ‘Aki ‘A E Tauhi Fonua’ Enriching Aotearoa with our culture of being guardians of the land.
Students were given the opportunity to wear Tongan cultural dress as part of their uniform on the final day and proudly woreTupenu, Ta ‘ovala and Kahoa. Mrs Langi and her Tongan language students made videos each day to help students and staff learn a little of the language. They also held arts and craft activities each day at lunchtime, weaving Kiekie, making Kahoa and bookmarks inspired by traditional tapa designs.
The highlight of the week for many was the fantastic concert organised by students. The talent, enthusiasm and energy on display was wonderful to see and rapturously received by the audience.Well done Mrs Langi who joined the celebration and danced for us!
A huge malo ‘aupito to Mrs Lute Langi and all the students who shared their culture, to enrich the lives of us all.
