Superb Teachers Recognised

One of the things that impressed new principal Shameen Hayat when she arrived at OHS was the outstanding quality of the classroom teachers. Knowing how important quality teaching is for academic success, Ms Hayat was determined to reward our most inspirational teachers; teachers who have the highest expectations for success and behaviour for students and themselves, who go above and beyond to engage students and promote meaningful learning experiences.

Ms Hayat approached long term supporter of the school and OHS alumnus Andrew Grant. Andrew is highly successful, a Senior Partner at McKinsey and Company, where he leads Global Public Sector Practice. Andrew is committed to education and has been involved in a number of education initiatives, including the establishment of Springboard Trust. He is a trustee of the Education Hub whose mission is “ to improve opportunities and outcomes for young people by bridging the gap between research and practice in education.” Andrew very generously agreed to provide $2500 each, for two teachers annually, in an award to be known as the Fran Compton Award. Fran was a past teacher at OHS, who inspired Andrew and gave him a life-long love of learning. The criteria for the award has been developed in consultation with Dr Nina Hood, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Auckland.

The inaugural recipients of the Fran Compton Awards for 2023 are, the inspirational teacher of English, Ms Sam Gionotti and the very talented Ms Janel Tolentio, who teaches both Science, particularly Physics and Music.

Congratulations to both these exceptional teachers.
