Samuel Shoots For The Stars

If you are interested in space then there is no better place to be than the U S Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, USA. This is exactly where Samuel Mellsop 10Ku spent a week of his last holidays.

Samuel lived on site and joined a group of 15-18 year olds from all over the USA and around the world, in the Space Academy. Space Academy trainees experience first hand the future of space travel and train to solve technically challenging problems in order to complete their space missions.

The academy had a scale replica of a space shuttle and a mission control centre. In one of the exercises Samuel was assigned the role of flight engineer. He had to go outside of the shuttle to remove an antenna and install it onto a satellite. Students train like an astronaut on a gravity chair and on the multi axis trainer. They design, build and launch a team rocket and participate in team building exercises. Exploring the Space Museum on site was another highlight of the week as was listening to the astronauts’ inspirational speeches to the group.

Samuel, who cannot remember a time when he was not interested in space says he has,

“ an urge to explore the unknown, whatever is out there”.

Samuel had an amazing time that has confirmed his desire to one day be involved in this challenging area of endeavour.
