The ‘roof shout’ is a tradition on building sites in New Zealand and has become an event to look forward to at OHS, thanks to the plentiful, delicious baking done for the occasion by the wonderful Mrs Maureen Meyer.
For the first time this year, the house that students have built under the supervision of the indomitable Mr Ernie Meyer and Head of Department Mr David Eastwood is being purchased by Kāinga Ora, the crown agency that provides rental housing for New Zealanders in need.
The project allows students real experience in the building trades. They gain site safe qualifications and learn skills which provide them and their future employers with tangible benefits.
The project would not be as successful as it is without the support of many individuals and businesses. We are particularly grateful to Mr Ernie Meyer who volunteers on the site to work with our young people every day. Mr Peter Mayow lends his expertise and time to the school.
