Muna 2023

One of the highlights of the year for some students is their involvement in MUNA, the Model United Nations Assembly.

More than 300 students and their teachers from Auckland and Northland gathered together at Auckland Girls Grammar to discuss, debate and try to come to a consensus about how to deal with the world’s most pressing problems. What they discovered is that it is not always easy to get a consensus.

OHS had two teams attending this year, one was allocated Chile as the country they were representing and the other was representing Lithuania. The allocation of these countries meant that our students and teachers had research to do, as they had to answer remits as their respective country would. One of the remits discussed was the state of the war in Ukraine and students were asked to offer possible solutions to end this conflict.

MUNA aims to develop participants' awareness of the role of the United Nations and the international  situation in the countries of the world and it certainly achieved this. Students get the opportunity to improve their public speaking and debating skills and to meet students from all over the region. Well done to team Chile for receiving an honorable mention for their speech making!

Congratulations to: Ms Elianna Gabriel, Manase Folau 13Ct, Stella Kiely 13Lv, Peter Muller 12Ll, Kate Pettigrew 13 Lv, Cameron Ross 12To, Badriya Shire 12Lu, Gabriel Taani 13Wt and Sadie Woodward 13Lv.

MUNA was an outstanding success, thoroughly enjoyed by all those who took part. Special thanks to Rotary who sponsor the event and in particular Maungakiekie Rotary for sponsoring our teams.
