Onehunga High School was privileged to welcome the Honourable Ron Mark, Minister of Defence with responsibility for the New Zealand Armed Forces, to the school on Friday.
The Minister was here to inspect the Onehunga High, Waitakere College and Kelston Boys High Service Academies on Parade. The two visiting service academies joined with the OHS Service Academy students to practice and perfect their drills before the Ministers arrival.
The Minister was accompanied by officers from the Army, Navy and Airforce. Simon Rooke Captain (Royal NZ Navy) Assistant Chief of Defence, Reserve Youth and Sport, Squadron Leader Kevin Shanley (RNZAF) Officer Commanding Youth Development (North) and Sergeant David Priore (NZ Army), joined the Minister to inspect the students on Parade.
The visitors were welcomed onto the Marae with a Haka Powhiri and the Services Haka at the conclusion of the inspection was phenomenal. The Minister spoke at length to students representing each of the service academies, at an afternoon tea held in the staffroom. Students were impressed with his knowledge and with the interest he had in learning about them and each school’s service academy. He took the time to answer their questions and pose for photographs with them.
Congratulations to all of the students involved and in particular, to Staff Anaru Watson and Mr Anthony Keung, who did an amazing job.
