The L2 BEE (Business Employment Education) class visited Auckland Airport this week. The visit organised with ARA (Auckland Airport Jobs and Skills Hub), was fascinating as students were able to visit the operations room and get an insight into what happens behind the scenes in a busy airport.
They were able to see the incident room where fire, police, ambulance and airport staff would gather in the event of a serious incident. A large map of the airport precinct gave students a ‘birds eye’ view of the airport and surrounding areas. The bank of screens in the operations rooms were live streaming pictures from every part of the airport, the surrounding roads and car parks. There are hundreds of cameras monitoring every part of airport operations. They are there to keep people safe and to prevent any problem that may delay the safe departure and arrival of aircraft and people. Students learnt of all the jobs that they can access, many straight from school and the training and apprenticeship opportunities available to those people who prove enthusiastic and reliable. There are paid summer holiday jobs available; interested students who have a CV should register with Mrs Shaw in Careers.
ARA is tasked with connecting young people from local schools to career paths available in the airport precinct. They have excellent knowledge and relationships with hundreds of employers and provide direct, practical experience and support for young people and their families who are looking for employment at any level. OHS students and their families are very fortunate to be able to access this resource. Any student who is genuinely prepared to work hard and be reliable can leave school with a job.
