Posted in General Asbestos Removal - Redevelopment Work

Date: 27 February 2023

Kia Ora Koutou,

The next stage in redevelopment work at school is starting to occur, with the renovation of the Hall and D block.  The demolition stage of the work involves the controlled removal of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMS) internally from the Hall as part of the demolition work. Mutual Demolition, a licensed AsbestosRemovalist will be undertaking this work. This work once started is expected to take approximately 4 weeks. WorkSafe NZ has been notified that this licensed asbestos removal work is to be undertaken.

Onehunga High School has been consulted about the nature and timing of this work, together with the strict safety measures that will be used to ensure everyone’s safety. The following safety measures will be maintained for the duration of this part of the project:

  • All work will occur within the construction zone that is not accessible to students of staff.
  • The Hall will be closed up, and only work within the building envelope will be carried out during school hours.
  • The area that the asbestos containing material is being removed from, will be further sealed within the building envelope.
  • Asbestos containing material will only be taken outside the buildings to be disposed of outside school hours..
  • Air monitoring at the work site boundary will be place for the duration of the work. If asbestosfibres above the allowable safe limit are detected, work will cease immediately and corrective measures applied.
  • An independent party will carry out an inspection of the site on completion of the work, and issue a clearance certificate.

If you have any questions or concerns about the removal, please contact us at school on 09 636 6006.
